    Education in Ireland

Education in Ireland is largely under the direction of the government through the Minister for Education and Skills. In recent years, the national education system has been the focus of much reform. In terms of structure, the system is divided into primary, secondary, third-level and further education sectors.

Primary education in Ireland is compulsory for children aged between 4–16 years, and is divided into two main strands: primary and post-primary. Primary education is provided in primary schools and consists of eight years of education, known as the Junior and Senior Cycles.

Post-primary education is provided in secondary schools and consists of three different strands: the Junior Cycle, the Senior Cycle and the Leaving Certificate. Third-level education in Ireland is offered by universities, institutes of technology and other higher-level institutions. Most courses require entry via the Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications, although some institutions also offer mature student entry.
